Steinberger GL2T #4214 – Carbon Fiber Fingerboard Prototype | Billy Thomas | 1986 Newburgh, NY
$14,999.00
Description
This is not just a Steinberger—this is history.
GL2T #4214 was built in 1986 at the legendary Newburgh, NY factory, and is one of the most unique Steinbergers ever made. It features a prototype carbon fiber fingerboard—the only known example confirmed by Ned Steinberger himself. Unlike the production phenolic fingerboards, this one has carbon fiber under the frets, offering enhanced stiffness, sustain, and optimized TransTrem performance.
Tested and approved by David Torn, a pioneer of headless innovation, and ultimately given as payment to Billy Thomas, a master craftsman who helped renovate the Newburgh facility. Billy was instrumental in the development of the original headless bass and guitars, having worked alongside Ned since the 1970s. This instrument served both as compensation and as a symbol of appreciation for his contributions.
Other features:
• TransTrem tremolo system (fully functional)
• All-original electronics and hardware
• Exceptional playability and tone
• Comes with documentation personally signed by Ned Steinberger
This is more than a guitar—it’s a piece of Steinberger evolution, a tribute to the unsung builders behind the brand, and an ultra-rare collector’s instrument.
