The Legendary Pink Steinberger: The First GM4T in Custom Pink

In October 2022, David Egea, a musician and luthier from Buenos Aires, received a 1991 Steinberger GM4T for calibration. Its selected-wood body was stunning, but what caught his eye was hidden beneath: internal cavities painted in a vibrant pink. Intrigued, David discovered it might belong to the legendary “Pink Ladies,” a rare series of GM4T guitars produced in 1991.

By February 2023, David had purchased the guitar and reached out to experts like Natalie Thayer, who confirmed its extraordinary origins. In September 2024, he traveled to Astoria, NY, to meet Ned Steinberger himself. The guitar sparked an emotional reaction from Ned, who revealed its secret history: this wasn’t just any Pink Lady—it was the first GM4T ever made in pink. Crafted for a famous guitarist in 1991, the instrument vanished after its owner suffered a tragic accident. Ned explained its lighter shade of pink set it apart from the later “Pink Ladies,” debunking the myth of 12 guitars in the series—there were fewer than 10.

Further research traced the guitar’s journey through Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver, where it was stripped to expose its natural wood. Restored by Pat Wilkins and calibrated by HeadlessUSA, this historic GM4T is now back to its original, dazzling pink.

Today, we proudly present the first custom pink Steinberger GM4T—a rare gem, rediscovered and restored to inspire musicians and collectors alike.
