A Legacy Carved in Tone

Before the world knew Spector, before headless basses became icons, there was Billy Thomas—a skilled woodworker, passionate musician, and the quiet craftsman behind some of the earliest Spector instruments.

In the words of Stuart Spector:

“When I was making my first instrument, somebody told me about some guys in the neighborhood who had a wood shop. I went over there and met Billy Thomas, who became one of my closest lifelong friends. He was an experienced woodworker who also played guitar and bass. Billy was interested in what I was doing, and he offered to teach me how to run wood-working equipment without maiming myself. He was very proud that he came from three generations of woodworkers, all of whom had retained all of their fingers.”

That collaboration sparked a decades-long friendship, with Billy becoming a key figure in the birth of the NS bass and one of Stuart’s closest lifelong friends.

Featured in the May 2009 issue of Bass Player, Billy’s story is woven into the DNA of Spector Guitars—from the shop floors of Brooklyn to the hands of bassists around the world.
